When Tillie Anderson came to America, all she had was a needle. So she got herself a job in a tailor shop and waited for a dream to find her. One day, a man sped by on a bicycle. She was told "bicycles aren't for ladies," but from then on, Tillie dreamed of riding—not graceful figure eights, but speedy, scorching, racy riding! And she knew that couldn't be done in a fancy lady's dress. . . . With arduous training and her (shocking!) new clothes, Tillie became the women's bicycle-riding champion of the world.Sue Stauffacher's lively text and Sarah McMenemy's charming illustrations capture the energy of America's bicycle craze and tell the story of one woman who wouldn't let society's expectations stop her from achieving her dream.

K-Gr 2–After a short basic overview of the sport, the authors highlight a couple of rules, two pieces of equipment, and a few records. While it could be argued that some of these choices (such as in the rules section) are trivial in nature, the facts are sure to generate conversation, thereby expanding vocabulary for additional future reading. Internet sites can be found by going to the publisher's website. The large, colorful photographs are eye-catching and appealing. Even by sticking to controlled vocabulary and using repetition throughout, the authors impart fascinating information. Some of these statements were chosen especially to relate to the youngest readers, such as the fact that a football player was fined for celebrating too much after a touchdown because he made a snow angel.

Grade 2–4—Many unproven legends exist about the great artist da Vinci. One of them is that Leonardo's father asked him to decorate a shield for an employee. As was his habit, the young artist studied nature and created a creature composed of the most horrifying elements of several animals. Upon completing the monster, he invited his father into the studio, whereupon the man was frightened "out of his wits." The high quality of his son's painting, however, led him to sell the shield for a large sum. Leonardo's monster was allegedly passed on to a duke for even more money. Painterly illustrations realistically add depth to the story. Leonardo is depicted as a likable boy, yet the vibrant colors surrounding the unseen monster enhance the fantastical.
