Xena: Warrior Princess: Season One (Deluxe Collector's Edition) (1995)
By Starz / Anchor Bay.
Lucy Lawless, everyone's favorite warrior princess, kicks some serious butt in this comprehensive DVD collection. Although spun off from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena quickly vaulted past mighty Herc during her first season to become the syndicated TV phenomenon of the year. It's easy to understand why. Beyond the pure pleasure of watching Lawless do battle in skimpy leathers and form-fitting breastplate, viewers were treated to nonstop action laced with, like, totally anachronistic 1990s dialogue and pop culture references ("I hear Buffus the Bacchae Slayer is playing next door"). Fantasy buffs lapped up the show's wonderful creatures and campy special effects. Feminists praised Xena as a terrific role model for young women. And horny guys and lesbians alike were seduced by Xena's erotically charged relationship with Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor), the toothsome bard who served as her sidekick.
Failure to Launch (Full Screen Edition) (2006)
The plot of Failure to Launch is utterly implausible, yet the movie is thoroughly fun. Tripp (laid-back Matthew McConaughey, Sahara, Dazed and Confused) is a 35-year-old man who still lives with his parents (Kathy Bates, Misery, and ex-quarterback Terry Bradshaw)--and they aren't happy about it. Eager to get him out of the nest, they hire Paula (Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker), a professional motivator who feigns relationships with boy-men so that their improved self-esteem will lead them to leave the nest. But Tripp's not the usual insecure shut-in Paula's used to, and as sparks fly, Paula finds herself losing her professional distance. This sort of set-up drove classic screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s; once you embrace the absurdity, the movie zips along with a surprising balance of humor and bittersweet shadings.
By 20th Century Fox.
Considered by many to be Shakespeare's worst play, Titus Andronicus is a bloodthirsty tragedy full of villainous heroes and bottomless revenge--hardly the stuff of big-screen directorial debuts, it would seem. Yet Julie Taymor dives headfirst into moviemaking with Titus, a spectacular adaptation that manages to find beauty and humor in the piles of carnage. The story begins simply enough by Shakespearean standards: celebrated Roman warrior Titus Andronicus (Anthony Hopkins) returns from a hard-won victory to bury his slain sons and avenge their deaths by killing the eldest son of his enemy, Tamora, queen of the Goths (Jessica Lange). Tamora responds by seducing the impressionable new emperor and setting all of Rome into a downward spiral of revenge, madness, and death.
The Honeymooners (Full Screen Special Collector's Edition) (2005)
Cedric the Entertainer transforms Jackie Gleason's classic blue-collar sitcom The Honeymooners into an urban comedy. New York City bus driver Ralph Kramden (Cedric, Barbershop) lives in volatile bliss with his wife Alice (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On). His best friend Ed Norton (Mike Epps, Next Friday) and his wife Trixie (Regina Hall, Scary Movie) live upstairs in a cramped, dingy apartment building. Ralph and Ed get into constant trouble due to their brainless get-rich-quick schemes, including buying a Pullman train car and trying to race an abandoned greyhound--schemes which only serve to lose the money they need to buy a charming duplex on a tree-lined street. Unfortunately, there's a sleazy real-estate agent (Eric Stoltz, Pulp Fiction) who's wooing the little old lady who owns the property, so it's a race to see if Ralph and Ed can raise the money before the bill of sale gets signed.
