With food supplies tightening, countries are competing for the land and water resources needed to feed their people. With food scarcity driven by falling water tables, eroding soils, and rising temperatures, control of arable land and water resources is moving to center stage in the global struggle for food security. “In this era of tightening world food supplies, the ability to grow food is fast becoming a new form of geopolitical leverage. My First Summer in the Sierra: Illustrated Edition
Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Scot Miller
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; 100 Ill An edition (2011, Mar 10th).
Pages: 204
From the photographer who brought Thoreau's Walden and Cape Cod to life comes a new work combining classic literature with brand-new photography. This time, Scot Miller takes on the seminal work of John Muir, My First Summer in the Sierra. The book details Muir's first extended trip to the Sierra Nevada in what is now Yosemite National Park, a landscape that entranced him immediately and had a profound effect on his life. The towering waterfalls, natural rock formations, and abundant plant and animal life helped Muir develop his views of the natural world, views that would eventually lead him to push for the creation of the national parks. Timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the book's original publication by Houghton Mifflin Company, My First Summer in the Sierra is illustrated with Miller's stunning photographs, showcasing the dramatic landscape of the High Sierra plus John Muir's illustrations from the original edition and several previously unpublished illustrations from his 1911 manuscript. more

But Will the Planet Notice?: How Smart Economics Can Save the World
Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Gernot Wagner
Format: Paperback
Publisher: Hill and Wang (2012, Sep 4th).
Pages: 272
You are one of seven billion people on Earth. Whatever you or I do personally—eat tofu in a Hummer or hamburgers in a Prius—the planet doesn’t notice. In our confrontation with climate change, species preservation, and a planet going off the cliff, it is what several billion people do that makes a difference. The solution? It isn't science, politics, or activism. It's smarter economics. The hope of mankind, and indeed of every living thing on the planet, is now in the hands of the dismal science. Fortunately, we’ve been there before. Economists helped crack the acid rain problem in the 1990's (admittedly with a strong assist from a phalanx of lawyers and activists). Economists have helped get lead out of our gas, and they can explain why lobsters haven’t disappeared off the coast of New England but tuna is on the verge of extinction. more

Exploring Heredity (Let's Explore Life Science)
Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Ella Hawley
Format: Library Binding
Publisher: Powerkids Pr (2012, Aug 10th).
Pages: 24
Gr 2-5-In this set of loosely connected titles, Food Chains clearly explains basic concepts. Some confusion may result between Ecosystems and Environment. Both define their subjects similarly: a place where plants and animals live or interact and offer the backyard and a pond as examples. Nutrition references the new USDA MyPlate guide, while Heredity offers a good visual and text explanation of dominant and recessive genes. Both provide adequate introductions to their topics. Though Living Things contains useful information about domains and kingdoms, it is not well organized. Bacteria and Archaea are mentioned first but discussed after all the kingdoms in Eukarya except protists. A chart classifies a housecat from domain to species without clear definitions of phylum, order, or genus. more
