    Cold Light of Day (2012)

The Cold Light of Day is most notable for two things. It stars Henry Cavill, the British actor plucked from near-obscurity to be Superman in the 2013 reboot, Man of Steel. It also features an extended cameo appearance from Bruce Willis, who does something he's rarely done as a good-guy action hero before. The early-on plot twist is a little shocking, but not necessarily a surprise based on the fact that this is not a vehicle for Willis. It seems to be mostly a tryout for Cavill as a leading man that gives him a chance to practice his American accent. Other than those novelty factors, this clichéd thriller is a fairly routine exercise in Bourne/Bond espionage action that showcases gunplay, explosions, double-crossing spies, and a fish-out-of-water protagonist fighting for his life against exotic background locales. more

Clint Eastwood has developed a killer changeup during his career, using his iconic status and mainstream credibility to take audiences to some thoughtfully unexpected places. (How the man behind the lyrical Letters from Iwo Jima and A Perfect World can also peel off something like the cheerfully meatheaded The Rookie is one of the most enjoyable mysteries in Hollywood.) The biggest surprise behind Trouble with the Curve, Eastwood's first time in front of the camera since Gran Torino (and his first appearance in a film he hasn't directed since 1993's In the Line of Fire), is how resolutely unsurprising it is, telling its story with an unfashionably retro simplicity. Still, even if the resolution is easily guessed, the star's trademark glower and a stellar supporting cast make it an exceedingly pleasant journey. more

At a time when pop culture-savvy assassins run a dime a dozen, In Bruges, the first film from Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, registered as a brilliant anomaly: a literate, mordantly funny hit man movie that didn't lean on the standard Tarantinoisms. (If the director had a cinematic inspiration, it was more likely Stephen Frears's masterful 1984 film The Hit.) Seven Psychopaths, McDonagh's follow-up, strikes a much broader vein, melding parody, self-referential humor, and clever meta-fiction into one big splattery ball. Buckle up, basically. Colin Farrell plays an Irish screenwriter named, er, Martin who is terminally stuck on his latest script, an ultraviolent affair named "Seven Psychopaths." (We mentioned that this is meta, right?) Desperate for an ending, he turns to his lowlife friend (Sam Rockwell) for inspiration. more

When he's not making gargantuan movies about giant robots and/or comic book hell-beasts, Guillermo del Toro as a producer has fostered a movement toward dreamy, fairy-tale horror (The Orphanage, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark), where primally Grimm scenarios reach some unusually bittersweet resolutions. Mama, del Toro's 2013 production, continues this winning storybook streak, driven by a fiercely against-type performance by Jessica Chastain and an impressive number of uneasy frights. (How many times can a little girl ferally scuttling around the edges of the frame be scary? Quite a few, actually.) Beginning with a literal Once Upon a Time, director-cowriter Andrés Muschietti's film concerns a pair of young girls left stranded in a creepy cabin in the woods after a family tragedy. more

The great crime novelist Donald E. Westlake was so prolific that he required several pen names to attach to books that covered all the writing styles at his command. Much loved by many was Richard Stark, Westlake's moniker for the author who wrote about a deliciously enigmatic professional thief named Parker. Parker has shown up in several movie adaptations, but Parker is the first to identify him with that name. Even though hulking bulldog Jason Statham plays him with the brute force and inelegant craft that has made the actor such a predictable action hero, Parker neatly captures the essence of the man that Westlake/Stark painted on the page. Parker is ostensibly based on the Parker novel Flashfire, though its plot is essentially the same kind of revenge tale all the other Parker character movies have been. more

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:
    Format:   DVD
Publisher:   Universal Studios (2013, Apr 23rd).
    Pages:    1

The "found footage" subgenre of horror films, as exemplified by Paranormal Activity, The Devil Inside, and countless others, receives a raunchy, raucous spoof by Marlon Wayans and a capable cast in the very broad comedy A Haunted House. Wayans, who also cowrote and coproduced the film, is top-billed as a young homeowner documenting every aspect of his new domestic situation with girlfriend Kisha (Essence Atkins) via digital camera. To his dismay, Wayans discovers that the camera footage reveals the presence of a supernatural entity from Kisha's past with designs on disrupting their lives (especially in the bedroom), which prompts the enlistment of various eccentric outsiders, including an ex-con priest (Cedric the Entertainer), to combat the otherworldly intruder. more

Gangster Squad (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) (2012)

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:
    Format:   DVD
Publisher:   Warner Home Video (2013, Apr 23rd).
    Pages:    1

The turf explored in Gangster Squad may not be entirely accurate to historical truth, but it sure looks like the world of the movie mobster: the basics are instantly recognizable if you've seen L.A. Confidential and The Untouchables. Take a post-World War II Los Angeles, plunge it in noir, drop a ruthless gangster into the mix, and let loose an extralegal squad of cops to break the mob's rule. The crime kingpin in question is Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), and his LAPD adversaries include a detective so square his fedora appears permanently affixed to his skull (Josh Brolin) and a ladies' man (Ryan Gosling) whose dalliance with Cohen's escort (Emma Stone) might not be the best idea for a smooth relationship. Their squad includes stalwart character actors such as Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, and an especially droll Robert Patrick. more
