  • The Guilt Trip (2012)

    The Guilt Trip (2012)

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:
    Format:   DVD
    Publisher:   Paramount (2013, Apr 30th).
    Pages:    1

After making his reputation as a performer of R-rated material, Seth Rogen seems an unlikely match for Barbra Streisand, iconic star of stage and screen, but The Guilt Trip works more often than not. Rogen plays Andy, an organic chemist who has poured his life savings into a nontoxic cleaning solution. While in New Jersey to make a pitch for Scieoclean--a name no one can pronounce--he pays a visit to his mother, Joyce (Streisand), who has plenty of friends, but gave up on romance when his father died (similarly, Andy threw in the towel when his first love fizzled out). In an unguarded moment, she tells her son that she named him after a college sweetheart, which makes such an impression that he invites her to accompany him across the country as he attempts to find a buyer for Scieoclean. more

  • Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

    Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:
    Format:   DVD
Publisher:   Weinstein Company (2000, Jan 1st).
    Pages:    1

In lesser hands than director David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook could have been a typically cringe-inducing throwaway Hollywood rom-com. As it is, this unusual and deeply affecting story of crazy love is a bold observation about the joys and tragedy of life lived by deeply flawed characters facing triumph and adversity against a backdrop of painfully familiar family dysfunction. It's also a tremendous achievement in formal structure, with a flair for storytelling that's as moving as it is delightful. Bradley Cooper plays Pat, an until-recently undiagnosed bipolar person who's just home from a lengthy stay in a mental institution and doing his darnedest to get his head and his life back on track. His concerned parents, vividly embodied by Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver, have plenty of troubles of their own when they warily take him in and tiptoe around the eggshells of a psyche that still veers wildly from seeming self-control to scary bouts of mania. more

  • Crow (1994)

    Crow (1994)

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:
    Format:   DVD
Publisher:   Miramax Lionsgate (2012, Aug 7th).
    Pages:    1

The Crow set the standard for dark and violent comic-book movies (like Spawn or director Alex Proyas's superior follow-up, Dark City), but it will forever be remembered as the film during which star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee) was accidentally killed on the set by a loaded gun. The filmmakers were able to digitally sample what they'd captured of Lee's performance and piece together enough footage to make the movie releasable. Indeed, it is probably more fascinating for that post-production story than for the tale on the screen. The Crow is appropriately cloaked in ominous expressionistic shadows, oozing urban dread and occult menace from every dank concrete crack, but it really adds up to a simple and perfunctory tale of ritual revenge. more

Valjean breaks parole, but he is granted a second chance by a kind bishop. He then moves from place to place throughout France, trying to live an honest life while ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe) hunts him relentlessly.
