    Pages:

All Music GuideBritain's Got Talent duo Jonathan & Charlotte surprised judges with their classical crossover audition in 2012. Although they failed to win the talent show, they released their debut album that year after signing to Simon Cowell's Syco label. Their second record, Perhaps Love follows the theme of their debut, including a mixture of classical songs and pop reworks. Here they interpret Florence + the Machine's "You've Got the Love" and "Falling Slowly" (made famous in the film-turned-musical Once) by Glen Hansard. Read More Show Less ... • Bryce Dessner:Aheym

    Bryce Dessner:Aheym

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:   Bryce Dessner
    Format:   Audio CD
Publisher:   ANTI Records (2013, Nov 5th).
    Pages:

All Music Guide - James Manheim Bryce Dessner is a guitarist with the alternative rock and Americana band the National, and this album with the Kronos Quartet appears not on its longtime label home of Nonesuch but on the rock-oriented ANTI imprint. The sound, from the standpoint of classical music, is a bit overheated, but Dessner certainly fits with the quartet's long-term goals of commissioning music from younger composers and reaching out generally to music lovers of whatever genre. The four pieces here were written for a concert in Brooklyn, New York's Prospect Park. Each one has a fairly specific program; the title work, "Aheym," denotes the concept "homeward" in Yiddish and is dedicated to the ... See more details below Eligible for . more

  • Storm

    Storm

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:   Celtic Thunder
    Format:   Audio CD
Publisher:   Celtic Thunder Ltd. / Decca Label Group (2011, Sep 20th).
    Pages:

All Music Guide - James Christopher Monger Celtic Thunder fans looking for a straight-ahead collection of slick, shamrock-kissed versions of traditional ballads and classic pop songs done in the group's signature grandiose fashion may come away disappointed with 2011's Storm. However, those looking for something more akin to Riverdance will likely find more than a few new favorites on this 15-track musical theater piece that follows a fictional cultural clash between Gypsies, settlers, and highwaymen. Recorded live at Arrow Hall in the International Centre in Toronto, Storm blends music, mythology, and dance, relying less on golden-throated crooning (though there is some of that) and more on an expert ... • Exile on Main Street

    Exile on Main Street

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:   The Rolling Stones
    Format:   Audio CD
Publisher:   Umvd Labels (2010, May 18th).
    Pages:

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine Legendary as it may be, Exile on Main St. presents a challenge for deluxe remastered reissues. Much of its myth lies in its murk, how its dense, scuzzy sound is the quintessential portrait of rock stars in decadent isolation, the legend bleeding into its creation so thoroughly it is impossible, and unnecessary, to separate one from the other. Without this nearly tactile sound, Exile wouldn't be Exile, so remastering the record is a tricky business because it should not be too clean. The remaster on the 2010 reissue -- available in a myriad of editions containing variations of a single-disc remaster and a second disc expanded with ten unreleased tracks - doesn't ... • Bad Self Portraits

    Bad Self Portraits

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:   ~ Lake Street Dive
    Format:   Audio CD
Publisher:   Signature Sounds Recordings (2014, Feb 18th).
    Pages:

All Music Guide - Matt Collar Bad Self Portraits is eclectic Boston band Lake Street Dive's third studio album, and the group's sixth release overall. Produced by Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Erin McKeown), the album comes two years after the group's covers EP, Fun Machine. Rather than revisit that album's neat gimmick of a jazz-soul band covering contemporary pop songs, Lake Street Dive instead delve into a substantial batch of their own blue-eyed-soul and Southern rock-inflected originals. Once again, the album showcases lead singer Rachel Price's resonant, old-school singing, which is still the main reason to listen to Lake Street Dive. Of course, with her band backing her at various times with harmony... See more details below Eligible for . more

    Format:   Audio CD
    Publisher:   Sumerian (2014, Feb 11th).
    Pages:

All Music Guide - Gregory Heaney While Deftones frontman Chino Moreno and Far guitarist Shaun Lopez have always been creative kindred spirits, the longtime friends have kept themselves busy in very different ways. Where Moreno prefers to be out in front of things, diving headlong into side projects like Team Sleep and Palms, Lopez has preferred to act more as a facilitator, producing and mixing albums. With Crosses (more commonly written out as '''), the pair finally team up to explore their shared melodic sensibilities. Working with a third co-conspirator, Chuck Doom, the trio's self-titled, full-length debut is a mysterious blend of dreamy pop and atmospheric electronica, evoking the chilled-out ... Issues

    Author/Actors/Director/etc.:   ~ Issues
    Format:   Audio CD
Publisher:   Rise Records (2014, Feb 18th).
    Pages:

All Music GuideThis is the self-titled debut album from American metalcore outfit Issues, and the first release to feature drummer Josh Manuel after the departure of Case Snedecor in early 2013. The album sees the group deliver a no-holds-barred onslaught of brutal metalcore with touches of R&B and hip-hop added to the mix. The single "Stingray Affliction" is included. All Music Guide - Gregory Heaney If you were to make a Venn diagram of metalcore and mainstream pop, at the point where they meet would sit Issues, a metalcore band merging the two disparate worlds together to create a sort of "new nu-metal." Mixing R&B's rhythmic sensibility with crushing ... See more details below Eligible for . more
