Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Matthew Locricchio
Format: Library Binding
Publisher: Marshall Cavendish Children's Books (2011, Sep 1st).
Grade 5 Up–Mouthwatering, close-up color photos make this book a visual feast. Locricchio begins with a region-by-region overview of Greece, highlighting the natural produce of each area and the resulting cuisine, then groups his recipes by type–"Pies & Pitas," "Entrées," etc. A section on kitchen safety encourages enlisting an adult as "assistant chef" and gives particulars on using knives. The recipes are at least moderately difficult, but instructions are carefully spelled out, with all cutting and chopping occurring before the actual cooking. Fresh, healthful ingredients are emphasized, and suggestions are offered for adapting the recipes for vegetarians. Among the dishes are "Greek Salad," "Yogurt and Cucumber Dip," "Eggplant and Ground Meat Casserole," and "Yogurt Cake with Fresh Orange Syrup," but there is no recipe for gyros! The graveyard is full of people that were going to do something, but never got around to it, says the author of this book. For anyone who has ever thought restoring a vintage car would be an enjoyable way to spend time, this book is the place to get going. Through the restoration of a 1930 Franklin, it details the step-by-step process of reclaiming an old jewel. It also addresses such issues as how much garage space you need, how long restoration takes, whether you should farm out some of the work, what kind of car you should get, where you can find it, and whether you should stay married. The author uses his 1930 Franklin as an example of restoring a vehicle that is roadworthy in todays traffic yet as original as possible, a car that is practical to enjoy without the expense of a car show standout. moreMore Info | Google Books | Check Availability
Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Chris Salewicz
Publisher: Faber & Faber (2011, Jun 7th).
What was it about Bob Marley that made him so popular in a world dominated by rock ’n’ roll? How is it that he not only has remained the single most successful reggae artist ever, but also has become a shining beacon of radicalism and peace to generation after generation of fans? Chris Salewicz, the bestselling author of Redemption Song, the classic biography of Joe Strummer, interviewed Marley in Jamaica in 1979. Now, for the first time, in this thorough, detailed account of Marley’s life and the world in which he grew up, Salewicz illuminates everything from the Rastafari religion and the musical scene in Jamaica to the spirit of the man himself. Interviews with dozens of people who knew Marley and have never spoken before are woven through the narrative as Salewicz seeks to explain why Marley has become such an enigmatic and heroic figure, loved by millions all over the world. moreMore Info | Google Books | Check Availability
Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Patrick Smith
Publisher: Pantheon (2010, Aug 31st).
From one of our foremost experts on Asia and its history comes this brilliant dissection of the relationship between East and West. In three succinct essays, Patrick Smith investigates the East’s endeavor to adopt Western technology and all that we consider modern. He underscores a crucial distinction between modernization (the simple emulation of the West) and the true task of "becoming modern." He examines the strategies that three prominent cultures-those of Japan, China, and India-evolved as they encountered materialistic foreign cultures and imported ideas while defending their own traditions. The result, Smith explains, has often been called "doubling"-a division of the self wherein Asians are receptive to Western products and ideas but simultaneously reject these same imports to emphasize the validity of the "unmodern. moreMore Info | Google Books | Check Availability
Author/Actors/Director/etc.: Justin Holcomb
Publisher: Crossway Books (2011, Jan 5th).
The statistics are jarring. One in four women and one in six men are or will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. But as sobering as the statistics are, they don’t begin to speak to the darkness and grief experienced by these victims. Because sexual assault causes physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual pain, victims need clear help, hope, and healing. In Rid of My Disgrace, a couple experienced in counseling victims of sexual assault explains how the grace of God can heal the broken and restore the disgraced.Justin and Lindsey Holcomb outline an approach for moving from destruction to redemption. While avoiding platitudes and shallow theology, Rid of My Disgrace combines biblical and theological depth with up-to-date research. moreMore Info | Google Books | Check Availability

The world's foremost expert on Maya culture looks at 2012 hysteria and explains the truth about what the Maya meant and what we want to believe.Apocalypse 2012: An Investigation into Civilizations End. The World Cataclysm in 2012. 2012: The return of Quetzalcoatl. According to many of these alarmingly titled books, the ancient Maya not only had a keen insight into the mystical workings of our planet and the cosmos, but they were also able to predict that the world will end in the year 2012.David Stuart, the foremost scholar of the Maya and recipient of numerous awards for his work, takes a hard look at the frenzy over 2012 and offers a fascination (and accurate) trip through Mayan culture and belief. Stuart shows how the idea that the "end of the Mayan calendar," which supposedly heralds the end of our own existence, says far more about our culture than about the ancient Maya. moreMore Info | Google Books | Check Availability
